Biogas accounted for over 40 percent of Denmark's gas consumption in 2025 - but the potential is greater

Biogas covered more than 40 percent of Denmark's gas consumption in 2025, but according to Biogas Denmark, existing bioresources offer the potential for significantly greater production.

In 2025, Danish biogas production accounted for more than 40 percent of total gas consumption. This is shown by new figures from Energinet, Biogas Danmark informs in a press release.

According to the organization, current production is far from fully utilizing Danish bioresources. It is estimated that biogas production can more than double through better use of existing residual biomass from agriculture, industry and households, among other things. This means that biogas can contribute even more to reducing Denmark's dependence on imported energy and strengthening energy security.

- In a year in which we have experienced threats to our energy infrastructure, biogas stands strengthened as a national energy source. This makes biogas a strategic asset for Denmark, says Lars Kaspersen, CEO of Biogas Danmark.

Electricity consumption is growing as a result of the electrification of industry, transport and heating, while the closure of central power plants increases the pressure on the energy system during periods of so-called dunkelflaute, when wind and sun do not deliver. In these situations, biogas can be stored in gas storage facilities and used flexibly for electricity and heat production, which, according to Biogas Danmark, underlines the potential for a significantly larger role in the Danish energy system. However, the organization points out that the pace of expansion does not follow the increasing need for stable and storable energy.

- The pace of expansion of biogas does not match the need. In Denmark, we have both the resources, the technology and a growing need for energy. Therefore, the next step should be to create the necessary framework that makes it possible to increase the production of biogas,” says Lars Kaspersen.
