The partners behind the Gaia project – Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and Vestforbrænding – express pride in being among the ten companies that have been prequalified for the Danish Energy Agency's CCS pool. The pool of 28.7 billion DKK supports the development of plants for capturing and storing CO2. This is stated by I/S Vestforbrænding in a press release.
The Gaia project has the ambition to build a full-scale plant for CO2 capture at Vestforbrænding's waste-to-energy plant in Glostrup and aims to capture up to 500,000 tons of CO2 annually. The project was selected from 16 applicants and according to CIP and Vestforbrænding, their project is one of the most mature in the field.
- We are proud to be prequalified and very pleased to see our important and significant project moving forward. Gaia has strong local roots and reflects a clear will on the part of the municipalities to commit to ambitious climate initiatives. We are confident that the government will support the most mature and effective solutions among the applicants. Our strong partnership with Vestforbrænding has made it possible to develop the project to a robust stage and the project also strengthens our experience with CO2 capture, which is very important for our Energy Transition Fund, says Nikos Samaritis, CEO of CIP's Energy Transition Fund.
CIP's investment in Gaia comes from their Energy Transition Fund, which focuses on the next generation of renewable technologies with a view to reducing emissions in sectors that are difficult to convert. The next milestone for the project is the submission of an indicative offer to the Danish Energy Agency in August. The final award of support is expected later this year.
- This milestone is a testament to the dedication and great effort of the entire Gaia team. We have worked intensively to get here, and I would like to thank everyone involved. Now that we are prequalified, we are fully focused on preparing the material for the indicative offer to be submitted in August, says Dennis Sanou, Project Director for Gaia.
