The Port of Rønne is the entire supply port of Bornholm, and this role obliges us to be a value creator for Bornholm and the Bornholm community. The port's development and future-proofing are crucial for the island's continued existence and development, and also for Denmark's position in the region. The port writes this in a press release.
- We are very grateful for the support and backing from the Bornholm business community, but also from our customers and close partners. With the port's development in recent years, we have strengthened our work as a prerequisite for growth and development on Bornholm. It also supports our long-term goal of developing a modern and up-to-date commercial port that creates economic growth and activity on Bornholm for the benefit of society, the business community and the island's future generations, says Jess Persson, chairman of the board of directors of Rønne Havn A/S.
Overall, Rønne Havn A/S achieved a record net turnover of DKK 126 million in 2023. DKK. The year's result ended with a profit of DKK 35 million, and was a result significantly above expectations. The year's net revenue thus increased for the 8th year in a row and is the company's largest revenue ever. The result is considered "satisfactory" by the board of directors.
- Throughout the year, we have strengthened our position as the entire port of Bornholm and as a growth engine for the development of the island. Therefore, during the year, we have also continued the necessary future-proofing of the port, where we are, among other things, providing new quays, expanding project areas, improving navigation conditions and continuing the climate protection of the port. At the end of the year, we also carried out an organizational and management adjustment to also ensure a strong business and commercial approach, and to maintain focus on safe operation and capacity management. We are thus both as a port and an organization strengthened for further growth and development in the coming years, says CEO of Rønne Port Lars Nordahl.
Expansion completed in 2025
In 2023, Rønne Port entered into an agreement with the contractor MT Højgaard Danmark, which will be responsible for building the next phases of the port's future-proofing. The work on the port's future-proofing is finally expected to be completed in 2025. The financing of the major investments in future-proofing is being done on commercial terms with both mortgages and bank loans.
The project areas in Sydhavnen have been let more than expected during the year, and this has also been to the delight of many local companies. Interest in using Rønne Port as an installation and shipping port is increasing rapidly. At present, a continuous order portfolio of more than 6 GigaWatt offshore projects ensures activities in the coming years. Several of the local companies on Bornholm are assigned tasks as subcontractors for the offshore projects, just as new companies from outside are establishing themselves on Bornholm.
There has been a continued development in passenger traffic to the island throughout the year, and there has been a good growth in the number of travelers and tourists who come to and from Bornholm both as passengers on the ferries and guests on one of the cruise ships that call at the port. In addition to revenue at the port, cruise ship calls also create increased revenue on the island in the form of increased activity for buses and guides, and opportunities for greater revenue in retail stores, restaurants, attractions and sights.
The bulk business constitutes an important business area and is not only part of the foundation for the port, but also for the island's businessmen and farmers. The port is looking to a future where work will be done to increase the amount of dry cargo to the island.
Will be a green Bunker Hub
In 2023, the port was part of an EU-funded study that looked at the possibility of local PtX production of green fuels. The report concludes that the production of green fuels is possible and that there is a market for green fuels locally, and it is expected that there will be a rapidly growing market for shipping traffic. The Port of Rønne is working with a number of partners to establish a green bunker hub in the Baltic Sea.
The Port of Rønne expects an increase in revenue in 2024 compared to 2023. The annual result for 2024 is expected to improve compared to 2023 with an expected result in 2024 of around DKK 40 million. DKK, where the company's investments in future-proofing the port and business arrangements are expected to further impact.
Throughout 2023, the Port of Rønne has continued and increased its support for projects and initiatives on Bornholm. This includes, among other things, cooperation with and support for various local projects and initiatives such as Destination Bornholm, Business Center Bornholm, Folkemødet, Bornholms Kulturuge, Bornholms Træbådelaug, Bornholms Mosteri, Tilflytterservice Bornholm, Barnets Blå hus and the ship Mester af Rønne. Through support for the Østersølab project, the Port of Rønne is also working to create a maritime community and cooperation that will contribute to the restoration of the marine environment in the Baltic Sea.
Rønne Havn A/S will hold its general meeting on April 30, 2024.
