Ørsted: CO2 storage permit important for Kalundborg CO2 Hub

In the state's tender for exploration licenses for CO2 storage, Ørsted, together with Equinor and the Nordsøfonden, has obtained permission from the Danish Energy Agency to explore the potential for CO2 storage in the Kalundborg area.

On Thursday, the Danish Energy Agency announced that Wintershall Dea International GmbH and Ineos E&P A/P, CarbonCuts A/S and a collaboration between Ørsted Carbon Solutions A/S and Equinor Low Carbon Solutions Denmark have been granted permission to investigate the possibility of CO2 storage at three different locations in Denmark. All companies have been granted the investigation permits in collaboration with the North Sea Fund.

The Energy Agency's granting of licenses marks a milestone in the development of a Danish and European industry for CO2 capture and storage, as it is the first time permits have been granted for onshore investigations.

Ørsted, Equinor and Nordsøfonden have been granted permission to investigate the subsoil at Kalundborg, and this fits in nicely with Ørsted's plans for CO2 capture in the area.

- We are pleased that we, together with Equinor and Nordsøfonden, have been granted a license to investigate whether the area in Kalundborg Municipality is suitable for CO2 storage. It is a natural next step in building our ‘Ørsted Kalundborg CO2 Hub’ to be involved, as we are already establishing logistics, infrastructure and a terminal solution for handling CO2 in Kalundborg. Capture and storage of CO2 is a necessary supplement to direct CO2 reductions if we are to curb the climate crisis in time, says Ole Thomsen, Senior Vice President and Head of Ørsted's Power Plant Business, in a press release.

Equinor will be the majority owner of the project, which will be called CO2 Storage Kalundborg, with an ownership stake of 60%, with Ørsted and Nordsøfonden each holding 20% each. Equinor has been storing CO2 since 1996 and thus has many years of experience with CO2 monitoring and exploration of the subsoil.

- We now look forward to starting to conduct surveys and collect data in close cooperation with the local community to confirm that the area we have been allocated is suitable for CO2 storage. A storage facility near Ørsted's Kalundborg CO2 Hub is a good idea, as Equinor and Ørsted can then combine their competencies as industrial partners by establishing a complete value chain for CO2 capture, transport and storage in the Kalundborg area, says Grete Tveit, Equinor's Director responsible for low-emission solutions.

Equinor will focus on investigating the suitability of the area for CO2 storage. Ørsted will contribute infrastructure and logistics from Ørsted Kalundborg CO2 Hub, which will capture CO2 from Asnæsværket in Kalundborg and Avedøreværket in Greater Copenhagen.
