The proportion of international workers in Denmark is growing and growing. And the demand for English-language education is increasing in step with it. That is why the Ministry of Children and Education is now opening a tender with a view to establishing three new IB educations.
- We need to hold a new tender round in order to retain the international workforce, says Anni Matthiesen, children's spokesperson for the Liberal Party.
IB stands for International Baccalaureate. The education is a two-year English-language upper secondary education. There are currently 13 public and 3 private IB offers in Denmark. In 2023, 2,105 students were taking an IB in Denmark.
And a study by Epinion conducted for the ministry predicts that the number will increase by 70 percent. towards 2033. The government will therefore add three more educational places to the offer, in the hope that more international employees will choose to stay while their children are studying. And the Confederation of Danish Industries is excited about this announcement.
- Labor is our most important currency, and therefore it is absolutely crucial that we can attract international talents and their families to Denmark.
- If the children thrive and are doing well, then there is also a greater likelihood that the parents will stay, says the deputy director of the organization, Signe Tychsen Philip.
The offer runs until October 1, 2025, and it can be applied for by all upper secondary education programs in Denmark. However, there are some places in the country where it will make a bigger difference than others, it says.
- Where we can see that the need is greatest, it is, among other things, in South Jutland and around Odense and also in some places on Zealand, says Anni Matthiesen.
The winners of the tender are expected to be presented at the end of 2025, after which the international IB organization (IBO) must give their final approval.
It is unknown exactly how long that process will end up being.
- It depends on whether the education programs have already made some of the things ready, and whether they already have experience in the area.
- It is clear that the process can take some time, but I could dream that we could start as early as August 2026, says the children's spokesperson.
