Danish District Heating welcomes the adoption of the CCUS bill

Danish District Heating is pleased with the rapid execution of the legislative proposal for the CCUS pool and CO2 storage before Christmas, but continues to remind us of a number of obstacles that need to be removed in the new year.

The Danish Parliament has today adopted two important bills that will ensure CO2 storage in the underground and the implementation of Denmark's first CCUS pool of eight billion. DKK and better conditions for municipal actors.

The adoption of the bill brings joy to Dansk Fjernvarme, which believes that there is a need for rapid implementation of CO2 capture, and if Denmark is to achieve its climate goals, it requires technological solutions such as CCUS, where emitting industry and energy production can capture, store and utilize CO2.

- It is really positive that the Danish Parliament has now adopted two bills that partly make it possible for Energinet through its subsidiary Gas Storage Denmark to develop CO2 storage at Stenlille on Zealand, partly make it possible for the Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities to allocate funds to support CCUS and partly make it possible for municipal companies to participate in tenders for CCUS funds, says Jannick H. Buhl, chief consultant at Dansk Fjernvarme and continues:

- Onshore CO2 storage is a really sensible solution that is expected to be far the cheapest and most climate-friendly way to store CO2 in the Danish underground. At the same time, the underground at Stenlille is well-known, and it is therefore a good place to start the development.

Municipal companies can now apply for the CCUS pool

Denmark's first CCUS pool will be decided in February, where there are three applicants for the pool in the form of Vestforbrænding, Ørsted Bioenergy & Thermal Power and Aalborg Portland, who hope to get a share of the pool's funds with their projects. Until now, it has not been possible for municipal companies such as Vestforbrænding to apply for CCUS funds, because there have been a number of legislative obstacles in the way. This will be eased a little with the adoption of the bill on the CCUS pool.

- It is positive that it will now be possible for municipal companies to enter into contracts with the state for support for CO2 capture. The bill is absolutely necessary for future CCUS projects at municipal waste-to-energy plants, among other things, says Jannick H. Buhl.

However, Danish District Heating still wants a number of things to be put in place, but this will hopefully happen, strongly led by the new government and the Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities.

- If we are to realize the great potential for CO2 capture that exists at municipal plants as soon as possible, it requires that the municipalities can also provide guarantees for the companies' investments when there is no support from the state. The adopted bill does not ensure this. It will also be necessary for municipal companies to be given the opportunity to establish CO2 capture as part of their main business, as this will contribute to a significantly faster development of CO2 capture in Denmark.
