CO2 handling could become a new main source of income for the Port of Aalborg, which has already taken the first steps towards preparing for a future with large amounts of liquid greenhouse gas. This is what Nordjyske writes.
- We expect that 200 ships will call at the Port of Aalborg each year loaded with CO2 that will enter Fidelis' handling facility, says CEO of Port of Aalborg Kristian Thulesen Dahl, who is CEO of Port of Aalborg.
In 2023, the port entered into an agreement with Fidelis New Energy to establish a facility for CO2 handling in Aalborg East. The facility is expected to be ready next year and will both store CO2 underground and utilize it for the production of green fuels such as PtX.
The port has consequently launched a tender for a comprehensive expansion of quay 8016. The expansion will ensure an additional 500 meters of quay and better areas behind it for heavy transport and storage. The total project has a value of 195 million DKK.
Among the most important players is the cement producer Aalborg Portland, which plans to send 400,000 tons of CO2 directly in a pipeline to the facility by 2030. Port of Aalborg expects that the facility will be able to receive up to four million tons of CO2 annually from 2026, with the possibility of later doubling the capacity.
