Energinet has broken ground on a major expansion of the high-voltage substation at Kassø west of Aabenraa. The project includes a new and larger 400 kV station and two new 150 kV stations and is scheduled to be completed in 2033. This is stated by Energinet in a press release.
On Wednesday, Aabenraa Mayor Jan Riber Jakobsen and Energinet's Director of Electricity Transmission, Nina Høegh Jensen, marked the start of construction on the project, which will be Denmark's largest high-voltage station measured in terms of both area and capacity.
The existing combined 400/150 kV station will be closed down and replaced by three new stations. The station area will also be expanded from approximately 12 hectares to approximately 135 hectares. The stations themselves will cover around 50 hectares, while the rest of the area will be used for recreational purposes with public access.
The expansion is due to an increasing need to transport more electricity and connect more renewable energy to the electricity grid in the area.
- The turning of the first sod is a big step, both locally and for the electricity grid in Denmark. Denmark is in the midst of a historic transition. We are producing more renewable energy, we are using more electricity, and we are transitioning both industry and society. And this requires more electricity for, among other things, transportation and heating. This places great demands on the electricity grid and the facilities that form the backbone of the system. When the project is completed, Kassø will be Denmark's largest high-voltage substation, both in terms of area and capacity. But size is not an end in itself. It is a response to a real need – for capacity, for security of supply and for an electricity grid that can support the green transition for many years to come, says Nina Høegh Jensen, Director of Electricity Transmission at Energinet.
According to Aabenraa Municipality, the increased capacity is important for both business development and security of supply in the region. Energinet also highlights the cooperation with the municipality as an important part of the project.
