The government and the Conservatives have agreed on the 2026 budget. The agreement comes unusually early in the year and was presented on Thursday afternoon.

Previously, Finance Minister Nicolai Wammen (S) has reached broad agreements on the budget, but this year's agreement includes only one party in addition to the government. This may be due to considerations for the municipal elections, which will take place on November 18. By then, there will be a maximum of one year until the general election, so many see it as a starting point, and thus a good municipal election is extra important. Nevertheless, the government is pleased that it has succeeded in getting the Conservatives to join the agreement.

- At a time when there is a lot of wind in the world, we are able to make decisions from different political points of view that Danes will benefit from in their everyday lives and their welfare, says Finance Minister Nicolai Wammen (S) on a doorstep.

The agreement changes important points. The increase in taxes on electric cars, which was otherwise due to come into effect in 2026, will be postponed by one year. It costs 1.3 billion kroner. Extra money has also been negotiated for climate and coastal protection. That is 900 million kroner in the period 2026 to 2029 according to Børsen, while DR writes that it will be one billion kroner in 2026. The government had played out with 887 million kroner in its proposal from August. An agreement has also been reached on a higher employment deduction for seniors. It was to cost four billion kroner over four years and, among other things, go to more seniors in work.

Reduction is electricity tax

The proposal for the Finance Act was presented at the end of August. Here, the Minister of Finance promised a shower of gifts for all citizens.

- All Danes will benefit from the proposal we are presenting here today, said Nicolai Wammen.

This included a number of price reductions. This applies to the electricity tax, which will be temporarily reduced for two years, a farewell to taxes on coffee, sweets and chocolate, and lower parental payments in daycare institutions.

Earlier this month, the Conservatives broke with the other bourgeois parties. In 2024, the parties made a point of saying that an agreement on the 2025 budget would either be reached with all four blue parties or none of them.

Things are going well in Denmark, and as recently as June, the economic room for manoeuvre was adjusted upwards by 58 billion kroner, so that it has increased in total by over 100 billion kroner since the 2022 election.

In 2023, 11 parties participated in the budget. In 2024, only the SF and the Radicals were involved in the budget with the government. It is usually in place in November.
