There must be a "proper social balance" between climate action and private finances, says Prime Minister.

Even though the green transition of road transport must be implemented, ordinary Danes with petrol and diesel cars must not be squeezed too hard on the wallet. This is what Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) said in the Folketingssalen during Tuesday's question time in response to a question from the political leader of the Danish Social Democrats, Martin Lidegaard.

- We must be very careful about doing anything in the climate area that puts additional strain on ordinary people's finances, she says.

The recurring theme in the question time with the Prime Minister has been the rising cost of living for Danes. However, Martin Lidegaard will instead talk to the Prime Minister about an accelerated green transition. The Prime Minister acknowledges that it is positive to have more electric cars on Danish roads. But she raises a flag that it will be expensive for many families to replace their petrol car.

- I understand if you want more electric cars - and there will be many of them - but many Danes still have a diesel or petrol car.

Therefore, the Prime Minister wants to ensure that the conversion of passenger cars does not place Danes with too large a private bill.

- It must be done in a socially fair way, she says.

Martin Lidegaard objects that as a driver you can charge your electric car cheaper than it costs to fill up the tank with petrol and diesel. But even though the running costs of an electric car may be favorable, the replacement itself will be a big expense for a family, says Mette Frederiksen.

- There are people who have a gasoline car today, where acquiring a new car is associated with costs, and therefore I appeal for a proper social balance, says Mette Frederiksen.
