Sweden's government puts an end to 13 planned offshore wind farms in large parts of the Baltic Sea. This is what the Swedish public service media SVT writes on Monday. This is done for security reasons. Among other things, the wind turbines would affect the sensors of the Swedish defence, it says.

- The government assesses that it would lead to unacceptable consequences for Sweden's defense to build the current projects in the Baltic Sea area, says the Swedish Minister of Defence, Pål Jonson.

The parks, which included hundreds of wind turbines, should have been located off Åland in the north and along the entire east coast down to Øresund, writes SVT.

The government refers to it as "a tough" decision to drop the planned parks.

In several other Nato countries, wind power is being expanded strongly, according to the Swedish news agency TT. Here, the defense and wind energy companies collaborate. In Poland, for example, radar and sonar systems are placed in the wind farms. But it is not possible to do in the specific case, says Jonsson to the news agency.

- It is not possible to compensate for the way the military geography looks right now, says Jonsson, referring to Russia and the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad between Lithuania and Poland.

Will make it harder to shoot down Russian missiles

In an analysis for SVT, the media's domestic policy commentator, Mats Knutson, writes:

- If wind farms obscure the view, the warning time in the event of a missile attack from Russia will be shorter. That would make it harder to shoot down incoming missiles.

- With its decision, the government chooses to put defense and security policy ahead of the development of wind power.

However, one of the wind farms - Poseidon - gets the green light. It must be located on the Swedish west coast roughly opposite Skagen. It will consist of a maximum of 81 wind turbines.
