The offshore wind industry is busy, and reports indicate that a shortage of installation vessels could become a bottleneck in the coming years. Wind shipping company Cadeler is trying to address these challenges, and the company currently has signed contracts for seven new vessels.
The first of these vessels - a so-called P-class vessel - was delivered to Cadeler on Friday from the COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (COSCO) shipyard in Qidong, China. The vessels are now ready to enter service after being named "Wind Peak" at a ceremony yesterday. Cadeler said in a statement.
According to Cadeler, the vessel is designed to meet the needs of Cadeler's customers and handle some of the largest wind turbine components in the offshore wind industry. It will be able to transport and install seven complete 15 MW wind turbine sets or five sets of 20+ MW turbines per load, which will reduce energy consumption during installation and installation time, ultimately lowering the overall cost and carbon footprint per installed turbine.
- Celebrating the entry into service of this impressive vessel is a milestone for Cadeler and our fantastic partners on the project. For everyone involved, this is the culmination of years of work, planning and monitoring, and I am extremely pleased to receive this remarkable addition to Cadeler, on time and within budget, says Mikkel Gleerup, CEO of Cadeler.
Sister ship on the way
Wind Peak has a "sister on the way". The ship Wind Pace is currently under construction. It will have the same specifications as Wind Peak and will be the largest vessels in Cadeler’s fleet with a deck area of 5,600 m², a cargo capacity of over 17,600 tonnes and a main crane capable of lifting more than 2,500 tonnes at 53 metres. In addition, each vessel can accommodate up to 130 crew members and installation technicians.
- Our customers are constantly pushing the boundaries in terms of the size and complexity of the wind turbines they install offshore. As a trusted supplier to the industry, our success is a measure of our ability to meet these changing needs both now and in the future, says Mikkel Gleerup.
Wind Peak’s sister vessel, Wind Pace, is expected to be delivered by the COSCO shipyard to Cadeler in the second quarter of 2025. Both vessels will be registered in Denmark.
