US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday night that will impose a 50 percent US import tariff on copper effective August 1. Trump announced this on his social media, Truth Social.
The president said that this is happening after he received a report regarding national security. Copper is used in the production of, among other things, airplanes, ships and ammunition, missile defense systems, radar systems and hypersonic weapons, Trump wrote. He added in his post that "we build a lot of them". According to the president, copper is the second most used material in American defense.
Trump criticizes his predecessor, Democrat Joe Biden, for having worsened the US industry in copper production, and that this will now change.
- The US will once again build a dominant copper industry, Trump writes.
The US has already imposed import tariffs on the metals aluminum and steel. Shortly after taking office on January 20, Trump announced a 25 percent tariff on aluminum and steel. This has since been increased to 50 percent.
In addition to the three metals, Trump is also considering imposing a separate import tariff of up to 200 percent on pharmaceuticals. He said this on Tuesday, according to Reuters, at a cabinet meeting. Trump also mentioned that he would give pharmaceutical manufacturers about a year or a year and a half to "get things right".
