Trump drops tariffs against the EU: Agreement on Greenland in place

A framework has been developed for a future agreement on Greenland, and at the same time tariffs on Greenland are being lifted. This is what US President Donald Trump writes on his social media Truth Social.

- Based on a very productive meeting I had with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, we have developed the framework for a future agreement regarding Greenland and indeed the entire Arctic, Trump writes.

According to the president, this solution, if implemented, will be a "great gain for the United States and all NATO countries".

- Based on this agreement, I will not introduce the tariffs that were to come into effect on February 1, Trump continued.

Mark Rutte subsequently confirms that the parties have made a framework agreement. He tells CNN.

- His (Trump's, ed.) post on Truth Social is completely spot on, and I completely agree with that, he says, adding that he had "a good meeting" with Trump.

It is still unknown what the agreement on Greenland specifically entails.

Greenland's head of government, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, will not comment on the development until a press conference on Thursday afternoon. This is what his office informs Ritzau.

Trump had otherwise threatened to impose tariffs on Denmark and other European countries in the heightened showdown over Greenland. Trump said that he would impose a ten percent tariff on the countries from February 1. The tariff would increase to 25 percent on June 1, if an agreement has not yet been reached, the president said.

To discuss tariff threats, the heads of state and government of the EU countries will meet in Brussels on Thursday. The extraordinary EU summit will still be held, writes Reuters. According to Trump, further discussions will take place on the "Golden Dome" missile defense system, as it "concerns Greenland".

- Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and various others will be responsible for the negotiations. They will report directly to me, writes Trump.

The meeting with Mark Rutte took place on Wednesday evening in connection with the World Economic Forum in Davos.  Shortly after Trump's announcement of a possible agreement, the US stock market rose by 1.5 percent, writes MarketWire.
