Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj hopes to visit US President Donald Trump in Washington on Friday. Zelenskyj said this according to Sky News at a press conference on Wednesday.
- I would very much like to carry out that visit, says the Ukrainian president.
The announcement comes after Ukraine and the US agreed on a framework agreement on minerals on Tuesday. An agreement can be signed in Washington on Friday.
- This is just a start. A framework agreement. It can be a great success. The success depends on our conversation with President Trump, says Zelenskyj.
- Without security guarantees, we will not get a just peace. We want a ceasefire, but without security, nothing will work, says the Ukrainian president.
At the same time, Zelenskyj says that Ukraine needs to know what to expect from the US. However, the White House is not welcoming Zelensky with open arms after his announcement on Wednesday.
- If Zelensky says that the mineral agreement is not finalized, I don't see how an invitation to meet Trump makes sense, a White House representative said, according to Reuters.
- There is an expectation that his visit is to show a completed agreement (on the mineral agreement, ed.), and according to his own words, they are not there now.
The agreement concerns the two countries jointly extracting minerals and metals in Ukraine. On Tuesday, the Financial Times wrote that the final version of the agreement does not contain the security guarantees that Ukraine has requested.
Instead, a fund will be established where Ukraine will put 50 percent of the revenues from, among other things, minerals, oil and gas. This fund will invest in projects in Ukraine.
It has not been determined how large a share of the fund the United States may receive. This and other major issues will be clarified in later agreements, the newspaper wrote on Tuesday.
According to a senior source in the Ukrainian government, the United States has removed several parts of the agreement that Ukraine opposed.
The United States is also said to have dropped a demand to receive $500 billion in potential earnings from the extraction of natural resources in Ukraine.
