The shipping group Maersk has entered into an agreement to supply green methanol to its fleet. This is stated in a press release on Wednesday morning.

The Chinese developer Goldwind is committed to supplying 500,000 tons of methanol annually from 2026. Methanol is an alternative fuel that will make sailing more environmentally friendly for the group. Rabab Raafat Boulos, Maersk's director of infrastructure, calls the agreement "a milestone".

- It enables us to significantly reduce our emissions footprint this decade and stay in line with the 1.5 degree Celsius goal set in the Paris Agreement, he says in the announcement.

- It ensures the continued delivery of low-emission services to our customers in the second half of this decade.

Largest agreement in the shipping industry to date

According to Maersk, it is the first time in the shipping industry that an agreement of this size has been concluded. So far, the challenge has been to obtain enough of the green fuel.

A.P. Møller Holding, which controls the shipping company, has already invested in the development itself and set up a company that will build, own and operate factories that can deliver it in the future.

In September, the group took delivery of the world's first methanol-powered container ship. It was named "Laura Mærsk". In addition to regular bunker oil, it can sail on green methanol, where emissions are at least 65 percent lower.

Maersk has around 700 ships in its fleet. Over the next few years, more than 20 methanol-powered ships will be delivered, while others will have their engines modified so that green methanol can be put in the tank.
