The municipally owned Bornholms Energi & Forsyning has delivered a total profit of 72 million DKK in 2024 and at the same time limited the price increases for electricity, water, heating and wastewater – among other things by using 18 million DKK of the result to lower bills for customers. The company writes this in a press release.
– I am very satisfied that we manage to run a healthy business in balance while at the same time keeping the price of water, heating and wastewater at a level that is below the general price development, says CEO Claus Andersen, CEO of Bornholms Energi & Forsyning.
The company has utilized technologies such as solar cells, batteries and a large electric boiler at the heating plant in Østerlars to reduce costs. In addition, there is income from the sale of system and balance services to Energinet, which has contributed to reducing the financial pressure on customers. 18 million DKK of the profit has also been transferred directly to the water, heating and wastewater companies, which has reduced the total charges.
- It is incredibly positive for the people of Bornholm that we can sell services outside the island, which creates income that keeps the price of water, heating and wastewater on Bornholm down, says Claus Andersen.
Electricity customers have also benefited from an adjustment to the company's electricity contracts, which has led to a smaller price reduction and more transparent terms in 2024.
However, the majority of the profit comes from investments in shares and bonds. The company considers the investments to be part of long-term asset management, where short-term fluctuations in the market do not change the strategy. According to the company, it is important to assess the development over time, but the result in 2024 is described as positive.
Since the profit cannot be paid to the Bornholm Regional Municipality without being offset against the state block grant, the funds will instead be invested locally. This applies, among other things, to green technology and the creation of local jobs and subcontractor cooperation.
The company has, among other things, renovated six older wind turbines and extended their lifespan by 15 years. According to the board of directors, this is both cheaper and more sustainable than establishing new turbines. In addition, Bornholms Energi & Forsyning has decided to install a 10 MW battery at the former coal-fired power plant. The battery will store energy from wind and sun when the price is low, and sell the electricity when it is high. This will increase security of supply, stabilize electricity prices and ensure more sustainable electricity in the electricity system. In the longer term, the company is also planning investments that will make it possible to produce district heating based on green electricity rather than straw and wood chips.
