New year, new opportunities and new challenges. Some come as unforeseen events and others can be predicted even before the year starts by looking at the calendar. Green Power Denmark has done the latter, and the organization has on its website identified five events that it believes will have an impact on the energy sector.
The first date that the trade organization points to is probably one that the green energy industry in particular is looking forward to with a bit of fear. It is January 20, when Donald Trump will be the 47th US president.
"How American politics develops under Donald Trump's leadership and what consequences it will have for the global green transition and Danish companies - that is worth keeping an eye on," says Green Power Denmark.
Two events are related to the EU, and only one has a specific date, namely 1 July, when Denmark takes over the EU presidency. Green Power Denmark hopes that Denmark will use this position to "focus on Danish green strengths and increase the export of Danish energy technology by putting energy and competitiveness on the agenda."
The second EU-related event is an expected proposal for a Clean Industrial Deal, which the new European Commission is expected to present during this year. The design of the Clean Industrial Deal will also have an impact on the Danish energy sector.
While the first three events were international, the last two, as Green Power Denmark points out, are more local. April 1 is the deadline for bidding for three offshore wind farms in Danish internal waters. The tender is for a minimum of 1 GW at Kattegat, a minimum of 1 GW at Kriegers Flak II and 0.8-1.2 GW at Hesselø. The latest tender in December in the North Sea ended without a bid, and that should not happen again.
"If we get another zero bid, it will emphasize that we are in a critical situation for the wind turbine industry and the green ambitions," writes Green Power Denmark.
The last key event for the energy industry, which the trade organization designates in advance, will take place on November 18. This is where local council elections will be held in the country's 98 municipalities. These elections could have a major impact on the spread of renewable energy on land.
"It is necessary for municipal Denmark to adopt local plans that take responsibility for the green transition."
