Denmark reaches half a million electric cars

Even though the half million mark has been reached, there are still more to come on Danish roads. There is already an electric car that dominates.

Denmark has now reached a milestone in the green transition of road transport. On March 5, 2025, over 500,000 rechargeable passenger cars were registered in the Danish car fleet, of which 74.5 percent are fully electric cars. This is according to Mobility Denmark.

Of the half million cars, plug-in hybrid cars account for 25.5 percent, while the rest are pure electric cars. According to figures from bilstatistik.dk, the Tesla Model Y is the most widely used electric car in the country with 39,840 registered copies. The milestone is seen as an important part of Denmark's efforts to reduce CO2 emissions from road transport.

- We are very pleased with the development in Denmark, where green cars have been a priority for both politicians and consumers. Greener road transport is a central part of Denmark's green transition, and with half a million cars running entirely or partly on electricity, we are one step closer to the goal. However, this milestone is not the end of the road, and there is still a need for political support to promote green development, says CEO of Mobility Denmark Mads Rørvig.

The rechargeable cars contribute to meeting the objective in the agreement on the Green Transition of Road Transport from 2020. The agreement aimed for 775,000 rechargeable commercial and passenger cars in 2030, and with 515,807 registered cars as of March 5, 2025, the development is on the right track.

- We expect that the 775,000 green cars that the 2020 agreement was supposed to ensure will become a reality in the near future. The agreement also opened up a higher level of ambition with a goal of one million green cars in 2030, but we believe that we should aim even higher when it comes to greener road transport. At the end of last year, we made a forecast that shows that Denmark could have up to 1.6 million electric cars in 2030 if consumers continue to have financial incentives to choose electric cars. According to the Climate Council, greener cars are crucial for Denmark to reach its climate goals, and therefore it is crucial that we continue to work to support the current development, which is absolutely necessary for the green transition in Denmark, says Mads Rørvig.

Mobility Denmark upgraded its expectations for the electric car population in November 2024. The forecast is based on continued political support for the green transition of road transport.
