An employee has died in an accident at Equinor's refinery in Mongstad in western Norway on Wednesday, September 17.

The accident occurred in connection with a lifting operation, Equinor said in a press release.

The deceased was employed by Crane Norway, a supplier of crane and lifting services to the refinery.

- We are deeply affected by this tragic accident, where a person lost their life while working for Equinor. I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues who have lost a loved one. In cooperation with the supplier companies, we will do everything we can to support those affected by this accident, says Equinor's CEO, Anders Opedal.

All non-critical activity at the facility has been suspended and the accident area has been cordoned off. On Wednesday afternoon, 1,500 employees were gathered for an information meeting, and further meetings will be held on Thursday morning. Equinor will also follow up with the suppliers' management.

The police have been notified and have launched an investigation, and Equinor itself will investigate the incident. The next of kin have been informed.
