Denmark ranks first in Europe when it comes to green transition, while Germany has fallen to tenth place in the new Green Transition Index. This is according to a study by the German consulting firm Oliver Wyman, which has assessed 29 European countries on their sustainability efforts. This is reported by the German media Der Spiegel.

– Denmark is investing heavily in offshore wind and green technologies such as hydrogen, and it is yielding results, says the report.

Germany, previously considered a frontrunner, is struggling with challenges in particular in power supply and transition technologies. The country's electricity mix is only in 13th place in the index, and there is a lack of significant investment in the necessary infrastructure.

– If Germany is to catch up with the leading countries, much larger investments are needed, the report points out.

According to the industry organizations BDEW and VKU, investments of 721 billion euros are required by 2030 to ensure the necessary development.

Scandinavia as a role model
The report highlights Denmark and other Scandinavian countries as examples of successful sustainability.

– The Scandinavian countries are leading the way with a strong focus on renewable energy and electrification of the transport sector, the report continues.

In Norway, almost 90 percent of all newly registered cars in 2024 were pure electric cars, while Sweden has been very successful in promoting public transport and electrified vehicles. Denmark stands out in particular with massive investments in green energy and an ambitious expansion of offshore wind.

Oliver Wyman concludes that Germany can draw important inspiration from its Nordic neighbors to regain momentum in the green transition.
