NKT has received final confirmation of the contracts for two high-voltage projects in Scotland under an existing framework agreement with SSEN Transmission. The parties already confirmed their partnership to develop the Western Isles and Spittal to Peterhead HVDC projects on 15 July 2024, and the contracts have now been signed in their final form. The cable manufacturer states this in a press release.
The final agreements include two 525 kV HVDC cable systems, where NKT provides design, production and installation of both on- and offshore cables. The projects are now included in the order book in the company's high-voltage business with a total value of approximately EUR 2 billion. The contract value is higher than the original announced estimate due to rising raw material prices and an expanded project scope, which includes, among other things, the full cable installation.
- We are pleased to have signed the final contracts for the two Scottish transmission links with SSEN Transmission. This milestone strengthens our position in the UK market and underlines our commitment to expanding the cable infrastructure that supports the region's transition to renewable energy, says Claes Westerlind, CEO of NKT.
The two HVDC links are part of SSEN Transmission's investment program Pathway to 2030. Western Isles will have a capacity of 1.8 GW and a cable route of approximately 170 km, while Spittal to Peterhead will have a capacity of 2.0 GW and a route of approximately 210 km. Both links are expected to be operational in 2030.
