For more than six years, the Port of Nakskov has been fighting to get permission to expand the shipping channel for six years. The port is, among other things, home to a blade factory for Vestas. And as the turbines get bigger and bigger, so do the blades. This creates a need for larger ships to transport them.
These ships need a deeper shipping channel. Therefore, the news about the permission for the shipping channel, which came in this news, is really good for the green transition, says a statement from Green Power Denmark.
- The permission to expand the shipping channel in Nakskov Fjord is really good news for the green transition and will mean new local jobs on Lolland. This helps to support the fact that Denmark is also a wind energy production country, says Jan Hylleberg, deputy managing director of Green Power Denmark, who has long worked for the expansion of the shipping channel in Nakskov Fjord to become a reality.
Larger wind turbines require larger conditions. Therefore, it is a central prerequisite for wind turbine production in Denmark that commercial ports like Nakskov have the opportunity to follow developments in the industry, so that they are geared to support the green transition, says the business organization.
- If we do not invest in the ports, we risk that they will constitute a bottleneck for the enormous expansion of wind energy that the whole world is about to embark on, and at the same time Denmark will miss out on a lot of jobs. Therefore, the news from Nakskov is very positive, says Jan Hylleberg.
At the end of September, the government's port partnership published its recommendations for a future port strategy. According to Green Power Denmark, one of the key recommendations is the need for the authorities to process port development projects much faster than today.
