There is good green news in the statistics on energy consumption in Denmark in 2023, which the Danish Energy Agency has just published.
The energy statistics show that Denmark's actual consumption of fossil fuels fell by 7.7 percent in 2023, and this was due not least to a large decrease of 36 percent in the consumption of coal, - a consumption that has not been lower in the 50 years that the Danish Energy Agency has compiled energy statistics. At the same time, natural gas consumption was reduced by a good five percent and oil consumption by almost four percent. This is stated by the Danish Energy Agency in a press release.
Some of the decrease in the consumption of fossil fuels can possibly be attributed to the fact that Denmark's actual energy consumption fell by 2.2 percent. to 667 PJ in 2023, while gross energy consumption, corrected for climate fluctuations and electricity trade, decreased by 0.6 percent. Since 1990, Denmark has reduced corrected gross energy consumption by 15.1 percent, and once again gross energy consumption sets a record low.
However, a large part of the decrease can also be attributed to an increase in the consumption of renewable energy, which increased by three percent last year. The increase is mainly due to a large increase of 35 percent in the consumption of solar energy, while the consumption of biogas, ambient heat, firewood and wind energy also contributed to the overall increase.
Furthermore, domestic production of renewable energy increased by 5.3% and, like in 2022, constitutes more than half of total domestic energy production. At the same time, the production of electricity based on renewable energy covered 82.1 percent of the domestic electricity supply in 2023, compared to 81.4 percent in 2019. in 2022. Wind power contributed 53.8 percent, while biomass covered 16.4 percent, solar energy 9.3 percent and biogas the remaining 2.5 percent.
As a consequence of lower consumption of fossil fuels, Denmark's actual CO2 emissions from energy consumption fell by 2.1 million tons in 2023 to 25.8 million tons. This corresponds to a decrease of 7.6 percent compared to 2022.
The final statement of Denmark's total greenhouse gas emissions in 2023 is expected to be published by DCE – National Center for Environment and Energy in the spring of 2025.
