The man arrested in connection with a ship collision that occurred in the North Sea on Monday was the captain of the container ship involved. The BBC reports. The 59-year-old man is suspected of gross negligence manslaughter, according to police.

- The arrested man will remain in police custody for the time being while investigations are ongoing, and we continue to speak to everyone involved to get the full picture of the incident, Humberside Police wrote in a statement.

At the same time, the police say that a criminal investigation has been launched into the ship collision. The arrest of the captain comes after the British Coast Guard has concluded a search operation for a missing crew member from one of the ships.

The collision between the ships occurred on Monday morning. Here, the tanker "Stena Immaculate" was hit by the container ship "Solong" while it was at anchor. As a result of the incident, fires broke out on both ships and several explosions occurred. This forced both crews to abandon their ships.

According to the British Minister for the Maritime Affairs, Mike Kane, the government is working on the assumption that the crew member from the container ship "Solong" who has not been found has lost his life, writes Reuters.

In addition to the missing crew member, the remaining crew members on the two ships have all survived.

On Monday, it was reported that the ship "Solong" was loaded with containers containing sodium cyanide, which is highly toxic. But on Tuesday, the owner of the cargo ship stated that there was no sodium cyanide on board.

- There are four containers that have previously contained the dangerous chemical, and these containers will continue to be monitored, according to a statement from the company Ernst Russ, which owns the ship.

The tanker "Stena Immaculate" was loaded with jet fuel for the US military.
