When the CO2 storage project Project Greensand begins storing CO2 in the Danish part of the North Sea at the end of 2025 or the beginning of 2026, pumps from the North Jutland pump specialist Svanehøj will play an important role.

Thus, Ineos, which is leading the project, has chosen Svanehøj as a supplier of CO2 cargo pumps for the land terminal in Esbjerg and for a specially designed CO2 transport ship, which is being built by the shipowner Royal Wagenborg at the Royal Niestern Sander shipyard in the Netherlands. The ship is expected to be ready at the end of 2025. This is stated by Svanehøj in a press release.

- Project Greensand is a milestone in Denmark's climate efforts and in many ways a groundbreaking project that we are proud to be a part of. We have worked closely with INEOS' development team over the past year to specify pump solutions that contribute to the efficient and safe handling of liquid CO2 both on land and at sea, says Magnus Madsen, Sales Manager, Cargo Gas, at Svanehøj.

Svanehøj sees CCS as a growth area

Project Greensand plans to store 400,000 tonnes of CO2 annually in its first commercial phase. The long-term ambition is to scale the capacity to up to 8 million tonnes annually as the amount of captured CO2 for storage increases.

Therefore, many pumps are needed both in this Greensand project and in other similar projects. Therefore, Svanehøj also sees CCS as one of the growth areas of the future and has taken significant steps into this market in recent years.

In 2024, Svanehøj was selected as a supplier of CO2 pumps for the world's largest CO2 transport ships to date, which are currently being built at HD Hyundai Mipo in South Korea. Svanehøj is also a supplier of CO2 pumps for the time being for four ships for CO2 transport at Northern Lights in Norway.

With the new order from Ineos for Project Greensand, Svanehøj cements its position as a leading supplier of pumps for the CCS market, which is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. According to the Global CCS Institute, last year there were 50 commercial CCS projects in operation worldwide, a further 44 under construction and more than 500 projects under development. This is an increase of 60 percent. compared to 2023.
