Wind turbine company: Here is the industry's overlooked problem

There is a lack of specific wind technician training and many more well-trained employees to provide service after the expansion of wind, warns the owner of a wind service company.

- Our people are in demand. We could easily find work for 50-100 people, but we would rather keep it as a smaller company so that it doesn't run away, says Gert Nygaard Laursen, owner-manager and founder of GNL Wind Service A/S.

He has created his own training department and insists that the company should not have growing pains, as it focuses on quality.

The company, which has just celebrated its tenth anniversary, is involved in servicing wind turbines of all sizes, from the small wind turbines on the farmer's farm to the largest offshore turbines at home and abroad, such as the large test turbines in Østerild. The focus is on quality in the staff, which currently has 20 technicians and eight employees in other functions.

- We want the most skilled technicians who can come out and meet many different tasks. Our people can find solutions and work independently, and they can change main components, says Gert Nygaard Laursen.

The company has even got its own technical training center at the company headquarters in Roslev with an employed trainer. This also means that the employees are often headhunted by other companies.

The need for a wind technician training

Today, the company recruits employees from a number of different vocational training programs such as mechanics, electricians or agricultural machinery mechanics, the latter being the company owner's own original training. After this, the employees are trained internally in addition to the necessary safety courses.

- We need to get hold of new young people, which is why someone is going to start developing a wind turbine technician training program. You forget that a lot of people will also be needed to maintain the turbines when the wind is expanded, says Gert Nygaard Laursen, before returning to the sought-after employees:

- Competition is always healthy, but more people need to get started. This is the responsibility of both the players in the industry and the politicians.

In addition to creating a new education, Gert Nygaard Laursen has another solution proposal ready.

- The mill owners and energy companies must be willing to pay a higher hourly wage, then there will also be room to get an apprentice, explains Gert Nygaard Laursen.
