The European Commission is proposing to impose a 25 percent tariff on a range of US goods. This is in response to US tariffs on steel and aluminium, according to a document seen by Reuters.
The goods range widely and include diamonds, dental floss, sausages, nuts and soybeans. The tariffs on some goods will come into effect on May 16 and others on December 1, it says. The news agency did not elaborate on the exact document in question.
Last week, Trump launched tariffs on countries around the world. Here he announced a 20 percent tariff on imports of EU goods. He had previously imposed a 25 percent tariff on steel and aluminium.
A tariff is an import tax that is imposed on goods produced abroad. The idea is that the goods that enter your country will become more expensive and that people will be less likely to buy them. The intention is that people will in turn buy cheaper, domestic products and thus strengthen the country's own economy.
With higher tariffs, Donald Trump wants to force foreign companies to produce their goods in the United States and create American jobs. The tariffs on EU goods will come into effect on April 9, Trump said. On Saturday, a basic tariff of 10 percent on foreign goods also came into effect.
On Thursday - the day after Trump launched the tariffs - the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that the EU "will stand together" and is ready to respond in kind to American tariffs on EU goods. In addition, it was said that they are already "finalizing the first countermeasures to tariffs on steel and aluminum".
Earlier on Monday, Leyen said that the EU has offered the United States an agreement on zero tariffs on cars and industrial products. In return, the United States must similarly impose zero tariffs on corresponding European goods entering the United States.
The EU Commission is also eyeing import quotas for aluminum. Member states are to vote on this proposal on April 9, writes Reuters.
