ODENSE: Odense could become the first municipality in the country to conduct a study into the possibility of nuclear power becoming part of the energy supply.

In the agenda for a meeting next week in Odense's climate and environment committee, politicians will vote on a recommendation from the administration, which will initiate such a study.

Here, the administration's argument is that "it is relevant to identify whether nuclear power can be a more effective way to reduce emissions (CO2, ed.)".

District heating Funen and Odense Municipality are faced with having to decide on the specific establishment of CO2 capture. District heating Funen and nine other applicants were prequalified in May to apply for the state pool for CO2 capture and storage. But in the administration's own words, these are "long-term and capital-intensive" investments, and it is therefore crucial that Odense Municipality "works holistically and highlights both opportunities and challenges, in order to ensure a robust and long-term business case".

A cheaper alternative

In other words, the study is about finding out whether it is possible to use nuclear power to reduce the municipality's CO2 emissions in a cheaper way than by using CO2 capture, writes TV2 Fyn.

- I am pleased that the administration in Odense Municipality is bringing up nuclear energy as a supplement to our energy supply. It is important that Denmark, and not least Odense, is open to achieving the goal of being a CO2 neutral area, says member of the climate and environment committee, Mark Grossmann (V) to the local media.

Nuclear power has been banned in Denmark by law since 1985, but in the spring the government decided to initiate an investigation into whether it would make sense to reconsider the use of nuclear power in Denmark.
