The largest plastic sorting plant in Denmark, which will open in Esbjerg in early 2024, is rapidly taking steps towards its final form. The plant will mark the beginning of a whole new era for plastic sorting and recycling in Denmark, as plastic waste will no longer need to be sent abroad.

The main building of the sorting plant is 173 meters long, 40 meters wide and 20 meters high, and it is being filled with more and more high-tech sorting equipment every day. When the plant is ready in early 2024, it will be able to handle all plastic waste in Denmark, thereby helping Denmark reach its goal of recycling even more plastic. ReSource is a plant that will recycle Danish plastic waste and prevent the plastic from being sent to incineration or exported abroad. Resource Denmark writes in a press release.

High-tech sorting

The installation of ReSource Denmark's sorting equipment, which has the capacity to recycle 160,000 tons of plastic per year, is now well underway.
The German manufacturer Eggersmann is the supplier of the high-tech equipment for sorting the plastic. In the process, impurities are first removed, and then the plastic is sorted into different qualities (HDPE, PP, LDPE, PET and PVC), which meet the requirements for both chemical and mechanical recycling. Tetra Pak and metal are also sorted out in the process and sent for recycling. ReSource thus achieves a very high recycling rate.

- The advantage of ReSource is that we use well-known technology on a large scale. This technology is very flexible, and we can add or change which plastic qualities we want to focus on in the sorting process. ReSource also enables traceability from waste to product, which will be crucial for key players in the industry going forward, says factory director Lars H. Kristensen.

When the plant is up and running, it will employ 50 full-time employees.

- We are well underway with recruitment and are looking for skilled colleagues who will help solve the plastic challenge. We currently have four employees, says the factory director.

But that number will soon change, as ReSource has a number of open positions, from operators and forklift drivers to maintenance technicians.

ReSource Denmark is owned 50/50 by Quantafuel ASA and the green French investment fund Eurazeo SE.
