Copenhagen Atomics is among 40 European startups that have secured support from the EU's EIC Accelerator program. The company will receive 2.5 million euros in grants and the possibility of up to 15 million euros in equity investment from the EIC fund to further develop its modular reactors using thorium-based liquid salt. The company said in a press release.

Copenhagen Atomics is developing compact, container-based reactors that operate at atmospheric pressure and use thorium-based liquid fuel and heavy water moderation. Each unit delivers 100 MWth and can use recycled nuclear waste as part of the fuel cycle, providing both energy production and long-lived waste reduction.

- This funding is a strong recognition of Copenhagen Atomics' vision to deliver clean, affordable and scalable energy through mass-produced reactors. It will accelerate our efforts to bring our technology from prototype to market, says Thomas Jam Pedersen, CEO of Copenhagen Atomics.

Two prototypes tested for thousands of hours

The company has already built and tested two full-scale prototypes and recorded over 10,000 operating days on key components such as pumps, heat exchangers and salt purification units. The next phase includes the construction of a third non-fission prototype and preparation for the first nuclear test in collaboration with the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland.

The EIC support will also help build Copenhagen Atomics’ production infrastructure, supply chain and licensing framework, which are essential for commercial deployment. In the longer term, the goal is to deploy fleets of these reactors to provide industrial heat and electricity for applications such as desalination, hydrogen and ammonia production.

Copenhagen Atomics was recently awarded the Technology Whitespace Award at the Reuters Global Energy Transition Awards 2025. The award recognizes technologies that fill critical gaps in the current energy transition, especially where mature solutions do not yet exist.
