US President Donald Trump does not know what the US Supreme Court will decide on tariffs. He said this during a press conference, marking the first year of his second presidential term.

The Supreme Court is to rule on the legal basis for a large part of the United States' increased tariffs on a number of countries.

- We have collected billions of dollars, and if we lose that case, it is possible that we will have to do the best we can to pay it back, Trump said at the press conference.

- I don't know how it can be done easily without hurting a lot of people, but we are anxiously awaiting that case, the president continued.

Several American companies and states have filed a lawsuit against the US administration because they believe that President Donald Trump has exceeded his powers by imposing increased tariffs on goods from abroad.

Will rule on law from the 70s

The case concerns the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) from 1977. It gives the US president the power to regulate trade in connection with an emergency.

Among other things, Trump has called the US trade deficit an emergency and used it as justification when he increased tariffs on goods from a wide range of countries in April last year.

But when the Supreme Court, which has a conservative majority of 6-3, had Trump's use of IEEPA on its agenda in November, several of the justices signaled skepticism about the White House's arguments for the use of the law. The US Supreme Court is expected to decide the case within the next few weeks. But it does not announce in advance which decisions it will make on specific days.

- I don't know what the Supreme Court is going to do, Trump says at the press conference.

During the press conference, Trump also criticizes foreigners who commit crimes in the US and highlights what the government has achieved. In a side note, he also mentions Venezuelan Nobel laureate and opposition politician Maria Machado, who gave her medal to Trump last week.

- Maybe we can get her involved in some way, Trump says of Venezuela, where the United States a few weeks ago took the now ousted president, Nicolas Maduro, prisoner.
