The biogas industry will strengthen efforts against methane loss

New mapping shows higher methane losses from Danish biogas plants, and Biogas Danmark is now intensifying its focus on reducing emissions.

The biogas industry recognizes the challenges with methane emissions and is now strengthening efforts to reduce leaks. This comes after the Danish Energy Agency's latest report shows an average methane loss of 2.8 percent from Danish biogas plants, compared to 2.5 percent in 2021. The industry organization announced this in a press release.

- Biogas is one of Denmark's most important and most effective climate measures. But we as an industry must have even better control over the loss of methane. This is shown by the figures from the Danish Energy Agency's quantification of methane losses from biogas plants. Therefore, we are placing additional focus on strengthening our members' work to reduce methane emissions, says Bruno Sander Nielsen, professional director of Biogas Denmark.

Denmark is the first country in the world to introduce targeted regulation of methane losses from biogas plants. The rules, which came into force in 2023, include requirements for self-monitoring, annual leak detection carried out by external experts and the possibility of sanctions from the Danish Energy Agency.

Biogas Danmark is now working with the Danish Energy Agency and experts to improve leak detection, processes and practical solutions. The association points to, among other things, increased training for measurement companies and the development of a best practice catalogue to strengthen monitoring and maintenance of biogas plants.

- It is important that authorities and the industry jointly use the experiences from the first years of regulation as leverage to improve efforts against methane loss. In this way, we can ensure that action is taken and responsibility is taken when leaks are found,” says Bruno Sander Nielsen.

Biogas Denmark assesses that biogas plants, despite the methane emissions, continue to be an effective climate measure. According to the calculations, biogas provides an annual net reduction of 1.6 million tons of CO?, corresponding to 2-3 percent of the total climate reduction needed to reach Denmark's 2030 target.
