85 climate scientists are criticizing a new report from the US Department of Energy in unusually clear terms. The report is described as full of errors, shortcomings and deliberate distortions that attempt to cast doubt on the conclusions of climate science and absolve fossil fuels of responsibility. This is reported by DR.

The report argues that oil, coal and gas do not pose an acute climate threat – and that modern energy should be celebrated rather than phased out. According to the researchers, the report's conclusions are detached from the scientific consensus and are based on outdated ideas and the omission of key facts.

Behind the report are five well-known climate skeptics, whom the researchers call hand-picked and without broad professional support. They believe that the report will pave the way for removing key environmental regulations and undermining the decision that currently makes it possible to limit greenhouse gas emissions.

- The report is misleading at best and downright dangerous at worst. Just look at the sections on drought and wildfires: The report almost claims that they haven't gotten worse. That's simply flat out wrong, says Emily L. Williams, a climate scientist at the University of California.
