"Green Fuels" attracted no fewer than 85 industry professionals from all over the country and even Norway to NorSea's "House of Offshore Innovation" building in Esbjerg.

PtX and green fuels attracted a full house

Esbjerg is to be the center of the pioneering work towards green fuels. But the tipping point where green fuels can compete on price is far in the future.

It may not be easy to attract people to Esbjerg from outside – But CIP HØST PTX Esbjerg did exactly that on Wednesday afternoon. This was also noted by the moderator, HØST's own director David Dupont-Mouritzen, in his welcome.

- We are incredibly happy that so many are here today, here are representatives from business, education, the environment and architecture, said David Dupont-Mouritzen, who was able to repeat a piece of news from the company:

- Yesterday we were able to talk about our collaboration with Monjasa, about something that will happen at the end of this decade.

The collaboration between HØST, which will produce green ammonia for shipping, and the bunkering company Monjasa, will partly mature by the end of this decade.

- There will be green fuel, and there will be engines for the ships that can sail on it. It's everything else around it that needs to be created. Here I'm thinking of the entire maritime value chain.

Pride in HØST

From CIP in Copenhagen, senior vice president for green fuels Jens Jødal Andersen had come to Esbjerg for a good reason.

- We are really proud of HØST, because it is the project that we are furthest ahead with worldwide, said Jens Jødal Andersen.

For the event's host Norsea, the location in Esbjerg was no coincidence.

- It is quite natural that we will once again be the first mover in Esbjerg within green fuels, because here we have the wind that is needed. I am proud of Esbjerg and our pioneering spirit. Now we have to think about all the practicalities surrounding PtX – and here Esbjerg is a good starting point, said Norsea's director Jesper Høj Hansen.

Long prospects but

When the green fuels will become common on the world's oceans, Deputy Director of the Danish Maritime Authority Rikke Wetter Olufsen left doubts.

- It has long prospects on a global level. But if you look at it locally in Esbjerg, there is the possibility of making agreements, as long as it is safe for the seafarers. It would then be a national agreement. If, on the other hand, we are talking about Esvagt sailing to the UK, for example, a bilateral agreement would be needed, she says of smaller national agreements that could pave the way for ammonia in shipping.

The bunkering company Monjasa is internationally based, and according to the company, something needs to happen before customers choose green over the much cheaper fossil fuels.

- Regulation of CO2 emissions is needed before anything happens. We are primarily looking outside the country, where our customers are, says Jesper Nielsen, group responsibility director at Monjasa.

Today, TotalEnergies is in charge of Danish oil and gas, but they are also looking very much at how to reduce the company's own CO2 emissions.

- We are looking into the fact that it costs one and a half times more than regular bunkering. And it won't be cheaper than that before 2040. The curves cross around 2035-2040. But someone has to dare to take the risk to start, said TotalEnergie's country manager Martin Rune Pedersen.

CIP's Jens Jødal Andersen could well recognize the risk.

- We are talking about having three billion euros to invest in it, but we also need to get the banks involved if it is to succeed, said Jens Jødal Andersen.

There was also a critic in the assembly in the form of Søren Vinding, who is a board member of the Danish Nature Conservation Association Fanø. The costs of PtX were precisely the focus for him.

- The other day I heard someone say about PtX that it is like putting out a fire with champagne. In reality, only those who live off it benefit from it. Is this for the benefit of society, said Søren Vinding.
