At the end of August, Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagard announced that there had been renewed hopes for the realization of Energiø Bornholm. The project had otherwise been on hold since winter, but the minister indicated that there had been positive indications from Germany about sharing the project.
It now appears that this momentum will also be put into action. In any case, Energinet has now placed a billion-kroner order with cable manufacturer NKT.
In particular, NKT has secured the contract to supply high-voltage cables for the connection between Energiø Bornholm and Zealand. The agreement with Energinet includes both design, production and installation of HVDC cable systems with a total value of approximately 4.9 billion kroner (approximately 650 million euros). This is stated by the Danish cable company in a statement.
The Danish network operator has chosen NKT to deliver 525 kV on- and offshore high-voltage cables based on direct current technology (HVDC). The cable will have a 200 km long route offshore and 16.8 km onshore. The project is part of the Danish connection to the energy island and contributes to a strengthened electricity infrastructure in both Denmark and Europe.
- We are very satisfied and proud to continue the long-term collaboration with Energinet on this innovative and ambitious project that strengthens the connection between Denmark and Germany. Energiø Bornholm is a key project for improving energy security and the transfer of renewable energy in Europe. With this agreement, we confirm our strong commitment to building the sustainable and secure energy infrastructure that Europe needs and demonstrate our competence in the development and installation of high-voltage cables, says Claes Westerlind, CEO of NKT.
Energiø Bornholm will be able to receive up to 3.8 GW of offshore wind and send the energy to both Denmark and Germany. NKT will also be responsible for the connection to the German electricity grid through a contract awarded by the German grid operator 50Hertz in 2023. This contract is part of a larger framework agreement and includes the delivery of HVDC cables to connect the energy island to the German mainland, parallel to the Danish connection.
The cables are produced in Karlskrona using renewable energy, and the installation will be carried out with the ship NKT Eleonora, which is expected to be ready in 2027. The project is expected to be commissioned in 2032.
