Holbæk revives dream of surplus heat from Novo Nordisk

Denmark's largest natural gas city is once again collaborating with Novo Nordisk on a district heating project that will utilize surplus heat from the industry in Kalundborg to heat Holbæk.

HOLBÆK: The municipal council in Holbæk has approved a declaration of intent that may pave the way for surplus heat from Novo Nordisk to be utilized for district heating in Holbæk. The municipality writes this in a press release.

Holbæk is Denmark's largest natural gas city, and since the government has previously declared a goal that all gas boilers will be phased out by 2035, Holbæk is working on various district heating projects. With the surplus heat from Novo Nordisk, it is expected to be able to heat 50,000 households.

- When an opportunity like this comes right past your front door, it would be obvious to invite them in. Because the idea of utilizing surplus heat from Kalundborg is fantastic. We have 17,500 households in Holbæk Municipality that are heated with natural gas. So it will be a win for the climate if we can get a climate-friendly heating solution for Holbæk Municipality, and a win for those of our citizens who can eventually replace their natural gas and oil boilers with district heating, says Mayor Christina Krzyrosiak Hansen (S).

High costs

This is not the first time such a project has been on the drawing board. There are a number of companies in Kalundborg that produce surplus heat, but the costs of sending district heating through Holbæk, Roskilde and on to Copenhagen have been too high for it to be sustainable. It will require over 100 km of buried pipes.  This is what Ingeniøren writes. But now something has changed:

- The big difference is that Novo Nordisk is currently investing 65 billion kroner and building many new factories in Kalundborg. This creates a significantly larger surplus of heat, and the quantities are now so large that we believe the project can be sustained, says Michael Hallgren, chairman of Kalundborg symbiosis and production director, Novo Nordisk Kalundborg.

When Holbæk Municipality and Novo Nordisk are now resuming work on the utilization of the surplus heat, it is to get a better overview of the project's potential. The new detailed analysis is based on more detailed foundations than previous studies and shows greater potential than originally expected.

The extent of the potential is not known at this time, and it is also unknown whether the project can be implemented or when the final decision to implement the project will be made.
