The threat to the water sector in Denmark has intensified, and small water utilities have been exposed to cyberattacks that have led to water interruptions.

The government is therefore allocating DKK 254 million up to 2029 to, among other things, establish a water disaster preparedness plan with a focus on drinking water and wastewater.

It is still the individual water utilities that ensure the supply, but the preparedness plan must raise the level of safety in the sector.

- We are facing a completely different serious reality than we did just a few years ago, and therefore we must prepare for attacks on critical infrastructure, of which the water sector is a crucial part. That is why we are now establishing a water disaster preparedness plan that can make an operational difference in a serious situation, says Environment Minister Magnus Heunicke (S) in a press release.

Of this amount, DKK 140 million will go to DKK for equipment such as pallet tanks, emergency generators, pumps and critical spare parts that smaller water supplies can rely on in the event of major outages.

A contingency center will be established at the Danish Environmental Protection Agency with 24/7 duty and a travel team that can assist with contingency planning and guidance for water supplies and wastewater companies.

The center must also continuously assess the need for new measures in line with changes in the threat landscape.
