Carbon Capture & Storage

In February 2023, the Danish Energy Agency granted the first exploration permits in Danish history for CO2 storage. Now the next chapter in the history of storage in the Danish subsoil begins, the agency announced in a statement.

On Wednesday, the Danish Energy Agency will open applications for permits to investigate the subsoil for the purpose of storing CO2 in the areas offered around Gassum, Havnsø, Rødby, Stenlille and Thorning.

"The permits to explore the subsoil will initially be granted for up to six years with the possibility of extension to ten years. If the area meets all environmental requirements and a suitable location for storing CO2 is identified, the permit holder has priority to apply for a storage permit, which can last up to 30 years," the statement reads.

The five areas offered each have geological structures in the subsurface that have been identified by the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) as potentially suitable for storing CO2. A strategic environmental assessment (SEA) has been carried out for the areas offered.

More tenders on the way

In addition to the tendered areas, the strategic environmental assessment also includes three coastal areas: 'Inez', 'Lisa' and 'Jammerbugt'.

However, the areas 'Inez' and 'Jammerbugt' cannot be tendered until a consultation on Denmark's new marine plan has been completed.

In view of the competitive situation and administration of the upcoming tender, the tender for the three areas will be carried out together.

The Danish Energy Agency expects the areas to be tendered in the first half of 2024. The tender material for the coastal areas is expected to be similar to the material for the tender for areas below the land surface, with the exception of provisions on conditions that are only relevant on land.

Three exploration permits for CO2 storage in the Danish part of the North Sea have already been granted.
