Germany repeats Danish offshore wind fiasco

Germany's latest tender for two offshore wind farms in the North Sea did not attract any investors. This means that the country is experiencing the same challenge as Denmark has had in recent years for the first time, according to several German media outlets. Back in 2023, Germany received bids for a total of 12.6 billion euros for areas with a capacity of seven gigawatts. Since then, investors have become more cautious, and the risk is considered too high.

- The result is a clear signal: The German offshore wind market is currently not interesting for investors. The current auction design forces developers to bear risks beyond their control without any form of protection, says Stefan Thimm, CEO of the interest group Bundesverband der Windparkbetreiber Offshore.

The failed German tender joins several others in Europe that have ended without a bid in recent years. Developers are increasingly emphasizing profitability over growth, and several governments have begun to provide subsidies to attract investment. In Denmark, the government is now trying to put previously failed projects up for tender again – this time with state support. Germany will try to get investors to bid on the tender again next year.
