The government's green ambition to get gas boilers out of Danish homes can be helped along with heat pumps and district heating.

However, a picture is emerging that heat pumps are not the Danes' preferred solution. Last year, 9,790 water-based heat pumps were sold that can be installed as a replacement for a gas boiler.

That's 60 percent fewer than the year before, according to figures from the Danish Energy Agency. The decline in sales is not surprising to the trade organization Tekniq, says sustainability manager Troels Hartung.

- If we are to ensure that Denmark's green transition continues, there must be a continuous focus on making it attractive for consumers to choose green solutions such as heat pumps over fossil alternatives, he says in a press release.

The government has allocated money for gas phasing out

During the current government period, around one billion has been allocated through several agreements. DKK from 2023 to 2026 to help households get rid of oil and gas boilers with the aim of significantly reducing gas boilers for heating by 2035.

In the name of the climate and security of supply, gas boilers must be replaced by district heating, which the ambition is to have rolled out in 2028, where it makes sense, and in other places individual heat supply such as heat pumps.

4,200 gas boilers were installed in Denmark last year. That is almost 400 more than the year before. This was shown in a document that DR had received from the Danish Safety Technology Authority on Monday. The development thus goes against the politically stated desire to phase out gas from the Danish heating supply.

Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard (M) pointed out, however, that approximately 80,000 private gas customers have replaced their gas boilers since 2022. In addition, just over 100,000 of the remaining 280,000 private gas customers are covered by an approved district heating project.
