Denmark is at the bottom when comparing the proportion of the gross domestic product of EU countries that goes to emergency preparedness. This is according to the magazine Momentum, published by the Association of Local Authorities (KL).
The magazine has made calculations based on figures from the EU's statistical office, Eurostat. In Denmark, emergency preparedness expenditure corresponds to 0.077 per cent of gross domestic product. This is the lowest proportion among EU countries.
A much larger proportion is spent in countries such as Sweden and Germany. Countries such as France, Finland, the Netherlands and Norway also spend a larger portion of their GDP on emergency preparedness.
Danish Emergency Preparedness: Denmark is very cost-effective
The chairman of Danish Emergency Preparedness, Jarl Vagn Hansen, tells Momentum that emergency preparedness in Denmark is run very cost-effectively. But he also notes that the preparedness is under pressure and not up to date enough.
The government has said that it is necessary to prioritize preparedness higher. This must be seen in light of a more serious threat picture in connection with, among other things, the war in Ukraine and climate change.
That is why a new Ministry for Public Security and Preparedness was established in August. The Liberal Party's Torsten Schack Pedersen was given the ministerial post. He is leading negotiations on a future preparedness agreement.
On Saturday, he told Momentum that a new political agreement must ensure that the Danish preparedness can handle the challenges of the future. At the same time, he emphasizes that the preparedness is solid today.
- We have a good and well-functioning rescue preparedness in Denmark, and the Danish preparedness is adapted to Danish conditions. Differences between preparedness across national borders can be due to many factors, including geography and different specific tasks, says the minister.
While Denmark is at the bottom when calculating expenditure on preparedness as a share of GDP, the ranking is slightly higher when looking at population. According to Momentum's calculations, Denmark is number ten from the bottom when calculating expenditure per capita.
