Aabenraa District Heating will soon be able to receive up to 50,000 MWh of surplus heat annually from the large PtX plant in Kassø. The surplus heat will help to ensure stable heating prices and reduce dependence on biomass. This is reported by Dansk Fjernvarme.
The pipe to the PtX plant has been laid and the pumping stations are ready. And now we are of course happy that testing of the plant has begun. It has been a bit delayed, but that is understandable when we are talking about completely new technology. I believe that we will be ready to operate fully during the summer, and that means that we will hopefully have some surplus heat for the next heating season, says Tommy Palmholt, CEO of Aabenraa Fjernvarme.
The PtX plant will produce green methanol, and the surplus heat from the process will be delivered at 50 degrees. A heat pump raises the temperature to 72 degrees, after which the heat is sent to district heating consumers.
The plant in Kassø follows the previous heat cooperation with local biomass sources. At the same time, it creates potential for future expansion, as the area also houses Northern Europe's largest solar park and a transformer station that can support further sector integration.
