The EU is ready for a "robust but constructive dialogue" with the US after Trump's threats to impose tariffs on European goods. This is what the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said after an EU meeting on Monday.
Here, the President of the European Commission emphasizes that the EU will respond if necessary if an agreement cannot be reached to avoid a tariff war.
- If the EU is attacked unfairly or arbitrarily, we will respond firmly, says von der Leyen.
On Monday, both Mexico and Canada succeeded in negotiating a 30-day suspension of the tariffs. The 25 percent tariff was otherwise supposed to come into effect on Tuesday.
For Mexico, it managed to get a suspension by promising the US that Mexico would deploy 10,000 soldiers to strengthen control on the border with the US. Canada also promised Trump to deploy 10,000 new guards on the border between the US and Canada. They will stop migrants and illegal drugs from entering the US from Canada.
Canada has also promised Trump to list drug cartels as terrorists, appoint a "Fentanyl czar" (someone responsible for the effort against the drug fentanyl, ed.) and to crack down "hard" on money laundering. This is what Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau writes on the social media X.
The EU also wants to engage in dialogue
The EU also wants to engage in dialogue with the US, emphasizes von der Leyen. She identifies the EU's relationship with the US as the most important for the union in terms of creating security and prosperity.
- In light of the fact that we know that there is a lot at stake, we discussed the possibility of strengthening pragmatic cooperation with the US. There are new challenges and new uncertainties, so the EU is ready for a robust but constructive dialogue with the US, says von der Leyen.
She emphasizes that a tariff war between the EU and the US will hit consumers, employees and businesses and should therefore be avoided.
- Tariffs create economic instability and drive up inflation. We do not see much good that can come out of it. That is why we prioritize productive negotiations, but at the same time are ready to stand firm, says von der Leyen.
