Aalborg Airport is upset about the postponed green flight route

In 2022, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced that Danes would be able to fly green on a domestic route by 2025 at the latest. Aalborg Airport had therefore looked forward to being able to offer passengers a climate-neutral flight as early as next year. Now the Ministry of Transport has announced that the first green route is not expected to open until April 2026.

The flight between Aalborg and Copenhagen is the most used domestic route in the country and is often mentioned as an obvious candidate to become climate-neutral. The delay therefore disappoints Aalborg Airport Director Niels Hemmingsen. However, he is not surprised, writes DR.

- We have always said that it should go a little faster if we were to achieve it by the end of 2025, says Niels Hemmingsen, CEO of Aalborg Airport.

In addition to the delay, the level of ambition has been adjusted downwards. Only 40 percent of the fuel on the upcoming route needs to be CO2-neutral. This is because the necessary permits to fly exclusively with sustainable fuel in the tank are still not available. Aalborg Airport will, however, continue to work towards CO2 neutrality and increased use of sustainable fuel, SAF. The government's goal is that all domestic air traffic should be green by 2030.
