Parties withdraw support for Gade, triggering a vote on the chairmanship

Two parties are withdrawing their support for Speaker of the Danish Parliament Søren Gade due to his dual role as chairman of the Port of Esbjerg, and therefore a vote on re-election is required.

For the first time in Søren Gade's (V) time as Speaker of the Danish Parliament, a vote will be held on his re-election to the post. This is clear, as the Unity Party and the Alternative will no longer support Gade as Speaker of the Danish Parliament. This is what the parties inform Politiken.

Søren Gade became Speaker of the Danish Parliament in 2022, and he has been re-elected once a year since then. All times this has happened with the support of all parties. In October, when the Danish Parliament opens, however, contrary to tradition, a vote will have to be held on Gade's re-election due to the two parties' lack of support for him.

- We do not believe that one can carry out other tasks than representing the Danish Parliament. It is a question of principle, and then the parties must indicate in a vote whether they still support Gade or not, explains the Red Unity Party's Peder Hvelplund to Ritzau.

Criticism of port chairmanship

Søren Gade has been in the media spotlight for a long time, after there has been criticism of his side job as paid chairman of the board of directors of the Port of Esbjerg. Gade has been criticized for the fact that the two chairman roles may cast doubt on his competence, as the Port of Esbjerg is in the running to become the place where billion-dollar warships will be built.

The Danish Democrats have not yet decided whether the party will continue to support Søren Gade as Speaker of the Folketing. However, both the SF, the Danish People's Party and the Radical Left will support the nomination of Søren Gade, the parties inform Politiken.

With the government parties behind them as additional protection, there is therefore no prospect of a majority against Søren Gade being re-elected as Speaker of the Folketing in the upcoming parliamentary year.

The Liberal Alliance notes that Søren Gade has for a long time refused to answer questions about the dual role from national media. However, the party does not believe that there should be a change in the chairmanship heading into what is likely to be the last year of the election period.

- It may be relevant to have a serious talk about it after a general election, if Søren Gade is also in the running to become Speaker of the Folketing at that time, the parties' finance spokesman, Ole Birk Olesen, tells the newspaper.
