The EU is a "mini-China", believes Donald Trump, who in a radio interview on Thursday criticizes the skewed trade balance between the US and the EU.
- They don't buy our cars, they don't buy our agricultural products, they don't buy anything. We have a 312 billion dollar trade deficit with the EU, he says.
- The EU is a mini - or not so mini - a mini-China, adds Trump.
Trump, who is the Republican presidential candidate at the election in the United States in less than two weeks, was the president of the United States from 2017 to 2021. During that period, he introduced higher tariffs on a wide range of goods, especially from China. This led the two countries into a trade war, which affected the global markets.
As part of his election campaign leading up to the presidential election in the United States on November 5, Trump has aired plans to introduce tariffs of ten to 20 percent. on virtually all imported goods. He has also announced tariffs of 60 per cent. or more on goods from China. He claims that this will strengthen the production of goods in the United States.
Earlier in October, Trump threatened to impose additional tariffs on goods from China if China "goes into Taiwan". Then a number of goods will be hit with a punitive tariff of between 150 and 200 per cent, Trump said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.
Will cost thousands of jobs
Danish Industry (DI) has calculated what it could cost Denmark if Trump is elected as the next president of the United States and does as he has announced.
A trade war between the US, China and the EU after the US election could cost the Danish economy DKK 85 billion. DKK and 30,000 jobs, DI's analysis shows.
- And I unfortunately see it as likely that Trump will implement what he says, says deputy director and head of DI Global Trade and Investments, Peter Thagesen.
- Trump's plans to introduce punitive tariffs on goods from both the EU and China are worrying, as it may well risk ending in a trade war. It will greatly damage a country like Denmark, which largely lives on exports.
