The United States cannot and will not accept that American AI companies are limited by "excessive" regulation. This is stated by US Vice President J.D. Vance in a speech at the AI Summit in Paris on Tuesday.
- The United States is a leader in AI, and our administration will maintain that leadership position, says J.D. Vance.
In the speech, he criticizes the EU for, in his view, going too far in its regulation of American companies and AI in general.
- We need our European friends to view AI developments with optimism instead of concern, says J.D. Vance.
He most directly criticizes the EU's Digital Services Act as an example of "overregulation."
- It is one thing to prevent digital abuse of children and quite another to prevent an adult from accessing information that a government believes is misinformation, says J.D. Vance.
He calls on the EU and others to refrain from restricting AI in its development. The statement comes after US President Donald Trump has also spoken out critically of the EU's regulation of the digital area.
Major American tech platforms such as Google and Facebook have been fined billions by the EU for not complying with European rules. This has led Trump to say that the fines are an unfair tax on American companies.
