In June last year, Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard (M) granted the parties behind CO2 Storage Kalundborg an exploration license for the subsoil in Kalundborg, after the Danish authorities had designated the area as one of several in Denmark where CO2 could potentially be stored safely and permanently.

Now CO2 Storage Kalundborg is preparing to begin a comprehensive investigation of the subsoil at Kalundborg, the investigations will begin in February. The survey will determine whether CO2 can be stored safely and permanently in the area. The survey is the first step in the process and is carried out with advanced measuring equipment, specially designed vehicles and ships. The study will provide an accurate picture of the geological composition of the subsoil down to a depth of 1,400 meters.

- We look forward to taking the next step, because it is absolutely crucial that the subsoil is measured and mapped thoroughly. An accurate picture must be formed of what the subsoil actually looks like all the way down to a depth of 1,400 meters, says project manager at CO2 Storage Kalundborg Ulrik Olbjørn in a press release.

The study will extend over several years and be carried out in three phases. The first phase includes mapping the subsoil, followed by drilling to a depth of 1,400 meters to collect data. In the final phase, tests will be carried out with water to simulate the subsoil's reaction to potential CO2 storage.

CO2 Storage Kalundborg is a collaboration between Equinor, Ørsted and the Danish state via the North Sea Fund. The authorities will ultimately decide whether the subsoil is suitable for storing CO2.
