Organizers behind carbon conference: We risk a shortage of carbon for future production

Denmark lacks a strategy to obtain enough CO2 and biomass for plastics, fuels and other products without fossil raw materials, according to the three-way alliance behind the carbon conference.

Denmark lacks a national strategy for green carbon if we are to achieve climate goals and at the same time ensure sufficient raw materials for everyday products without fossil sources.

That was the main message at this year's carbon conference at Skærbækværket, where the Triangle Energy Alliance, Food and Bio Cluster and the Danish Center for Energy Storage launched their recommendations for a national carbon strategy, which will subsequently be presented to ministers Jeppe Bruus (S) (Minister for Green Tripartite), Lars Aagaard (M) (Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities) and Jacob Jensen (V) (Minister for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries). This is stated by the parties in a statement.

Although the climate crisis is about too much CO2 in the atmosphere, according to the Triangle Energy Alliance, Food and Bio Cluster and the Danish Center for Energy Storage l, Denmark is facing an opposite challenge: In the future, we will need large amounts of carbon – including from captured CO2 – to produce plastics, chemicals, textiles and fuels that cannot be immediately electrified.

The organizers highlight biomass as the cheapest and most efficient source of green carbon. Photosynthesis in agriculture and forestry replaces the need for energy-intensive machinery and can deliver carbon in a relatively short time. To get the full benefit, agriculture must be arranged more variedly with crops and crop rotations that make better use of the growing season than traditional grain fields.

- The solutions in Denmark to phase out fossil fuels are, to a particular extent, electrification. It is also efficiency improvement and moderation. But it is still not enough to break free from 150 years of deep dependence on fossil resources. We must not only have a sustainable energy system. We must also have a sustainable production and industrial system, and this requires large amounts of carbon from CO2 and biomass, says Søren Schmidt Thomsen, CEO of Triangle Energy Alliance.

The recommendations for a national carbon strategy have been developed in collaboration between Triangle Energy Alliance, Food & Bio Cluster Denmark and the Danish Center for Energy Storage. The strategy focuses on the entire value chain – from resources to technology and infrastructure to storage and use. The organizers call on the government to anchor the work in one of the three relevant ministries.
